These Rainbow Trout were raised in our classroom incubator February 2005.  Eight out of the 479 eggs received exhibited the deformities pictured below.  421 healthy fry were released into Haag Lake from this batch.  Our STEP biologist gave the following explanation for the deformities.

"Most of the "curly frys" you experienced are probably a result of a temperature fluctuation. That may have been on my end, during transfer from the hatchery to my walk in cooler or from the cooler to your tank, or perhaps at some point during the rearing. Sometimes the eggs are jostled and the yolk gets damaged.  This can also cause some growth problems."
